Freestyle for Life

Latif Mercado has made a very impressive debut with this book. I originally heard of this book from rave reviews by a few well known Freestyle artists. Being a true fan of Freestyle, watching it grow from its infancy in the streets of Spanish Harlem and the South Bronx to a world wide phenomenon that still has a cult following to this day, I was very excited to see what this book was all about. First I have to say that Latif is a great writer who truly knows how to set up a scene, set a tone, and build characters. Like all great writers he knows how to draw the reader into the story and empathize with the main character. Although this is a book about freestyle music with a few tweaks the author could have made this about Salsa music, Hip-Hop music,or something else. Meaning this is more about an new artist struggling to break through into the music business and share his gift with others. its's the struggle all artists have to face, trying to balance their art form and their "real life". The main character Solo Cortez is so well written is that I found myself becoming him during his triumphs and feeling like a helpless brother or best friend during the tough times. I found myself breezing through this book at an alarming pace rushing through to the ending then craving for more. You don't have to be a fan of freestyle or the music genre at all to enjoy this book. If you're a fan of strong, well written character based stories then you won't be let down. I can't wait so see what Latif Mercado bring us next. I for one have become a huge fan and plan to buy the paperback when it comes out as well as his next novel.

Awesome Novel!

Freestyle for Life is a must-read! I was hooked from the first line and could not wait to see what happened next. There were unexpected twists and turns and many LOL moments. It was easy to relate to all of the characters on some level, my favorite being Yolanda for being an educated, yet street-smart, strong-minded and sassy Latina heroine. Latif's great writing skills, character development and story-telling techniques allowed me to visualize the characters and situations like a movie playing out in my mind (ever thought of making it a movie, Latif?). Congratulations on a great novel and looking forward to many more!

Latif Mercado is an incredible writer. Every Chapter kept me hanging in my seat, not wanting to put this novel down and as i kept reading it, it was so Intense & the Characters were so real that i could invision everything "Solo" was saying & doing. It was also heartfelt & teary eyed but @ the end, it was the greatest ending of all time & i was so happy for "Solo & Yolanda" & especially Solo's Mom "Donia". I must agree with many of the reviews put up about this book I had no idea it would take me in the way it did. I fell asleep with it and woke up with it. I was sad when I made it to the end I wanted so much to know what happens next to not only solo and Yolanda but Rick,mom and the many other players in this facinating story. Off the hook...

I really enjoyed the story thru this whole book... it not only made me feel like I was right there going thru everything that Solo (the main character of the story) was going thru, but was well written to the point that I could trully embody what he was feeling at different times of the story. At first I was thinking that this was just a documentary of some kind following a Freestyle artist to stardom, but it became very real and very serious to relate to the types of people in life and the trials and the obstacles to someones goals in life as it was for Solo.. job well done.

A riveting, well written book that delivers

Latif Mercado knows the world of Latin Freestyle music better than most, and he has used that insider knowledge to craft a fascinating story that grabs you from the first sentence and doesn't let you go until the last page is done. You don't have to be a fan of the Freestyle genre of music to appreciate this novel, as the world of Freestyle is only a backdrop to the timeless story told through the eyes of the main character Solo Cortez. As a writer, Mercado is very impressive - his ability to tell a story and make you feel as if you actually know and can identify with these characters is something that many writers never master. His writing style is so descriptive and visual that the characters really jump off the page - I really felt for these people as if I had known them my whole life. If this is an example of what his very first novel is like, I can't wait to get my hands on the next one!

KNOWING HIS BACKGROUND

 Being Latif's wife, I was a bit reluctant to write this review, but seeing as I'm a huge fan of urban novels it was only right. I watched as his story developed from an idea to a published book. I've seen it grow from a paragraph, to a chapter, to its final 500 pages. I'd sit during breakfast and listen as my hubby shared with me what he'd so far come up with. Though I've see this novel in it's various stages once he was done I was compelled to see how the story would flow. I have to admit I'm a fan of his writing. His style is unique and it draws such a clear picture, knowing Latif's background it's kind of scary how accurate his descriptions can be. When Latif finished writing the book he took a day and gave it one last read through wanting to spot any typos before the readers did. After all the writing, editing, and talking about the book he saved it in his computer and didn't mention it again. I assumed he was clearing his mind before moving forward...that wasn't it. He basically abandoned the whole project, something I'd never seen him do. When Latif starts something he always finishes it. So I brought it up to him he said "I did finish, I'm just not going to publish it. I asked him why? He said he didn't think it was good enough and didn't feel anyone would want to read it. After going back and forth with him for a few days, I finally convinced him to give it a shot. Freestyle4Life!!!

Freestyle For Life: A Must Read!

As everyone, I also enjoyed this novel very much! This novel really brings the reader on a journey with the main character Solo Cortez. He goes through so much and yet his passion for his music and its genre never leaves him or his heart. The reader feels like they are living the story throughout the pages of this book and that's due to the descriptive nature of the writing. The author Latif Mercado does a great job in giving his readers the feeling that we are Solo and we're telling this story. It's like we're right there living Solo's successes as well as his hardships. Freestyle music has always been a genre that's been overlooked by the mainstream and it's great that Latif is bringing new life to this genre. Freestyle music has always been about a passion for life, love and dreams and that's what this story entails. A great book by a great writer!! P.S. You don't have to be into Freestyle music to enjoy this book. Looking forward to the next one!

A Great Read!

It's so great that Latif chose to base his first novel with Freestyle music at its core. Although one doesn't have to be a fan of Freestyle to enjoy this book, it will sure please Freestyle fans as we know firsthand the memories that Freestyle brings. One feels for the realistic characters from the beginning of the story and I found myself rooting for Solo (the lead character). Not to give away any spoilers, but Solo is a Freestyle music artist who ends up going through stuff during an important event in his music career and he tries to overcome many hurdles to get his career back on track. He then has to deal with all of the backlash, personally and professionally, that comes along after everything he went through. The writing in this novel is fast paced, detailed and filled with emotion. It's a book about dreams and survival and how jealousy can lead to betrayal. This is a great read and comes highly recommended!! Congrats to Latif on a great book!! I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to another novel with a Freestyle setting!!

I dont usually read books but sure glad I read this one

 First of all this is the first book I've read in so many years but I was hooked. The writing was very clever. The plot had me hooked and the story line was amazing. I could hardly put the book down and was sad when I finished it. I recommend this book to anyone not just freestyle heads. The main character reminded me of many of my past friends I grew up with. I want the next book. Tell your family, tell your friends "Freestyle for life" is a must read.

Freestyle for the Realest!!!

 I was a lil skeptic at first when i heard Latif had wrote a book... I was like "Come on, Really now? an entertainment agent and CEO for La' is really gonna do this?" and though I had met him in the past back in 2008 at the Paradox in Austin, TX... I really thought his thing was managing events for the Entertainment industry... and well now the guy has changed my mind... I seen a few of his posting for his book that i finally decided to check it out after hearing a reading of the book on you tube. Now the book has many trips and turns that seem to intrigue me. some of the things that are said in conversations between the characters almost seem to be dejavu for me... which kept it real... As I kept reading I felt anoxic and lost in the thought of what is really going on in the mind of the characters in the book. It took me a week to finish the book... and all I wanted to do was talk with someone about this book. At work I kept mentioning what was going on with Solo, what was going on with Yolanda, what was going on with Santos, Flaco, and "the" homeboy Rick!!!! Every one at work though I was talking about real people... when they found out i was talking about a book they thought I was tripping cause to me the characters was real... I couldn't wait to have a chance to pick up the book again to see what was coming next. I related to this book and growing up in an lower class community sometimes you need to watch your own back... there are very few people in your life you can trust... and sometime we have bad judgment and trust the wrong people... even a friend you consider to be a brother will set you up if the price is right... Envious people are all around and sometimes we miss that because we don't wanna believe that it could happen to us. now this book also has other stuff and other stories going on around the main character. Latif is an author keepin it true to the realest. I can't wait for you to produce another one!!!! MiggZ

Latif, Awesome doesn't even begin to describe what your book was, it was amazing!! So when will you be writing part 2?? I totally felt like I was in the story, I even had dreams about the book lol But overall it shows that there are all different types of people in this world, trust no one no matter how much of a friend you think they really are!!! My favorite character being Yolanda for pushing Solo to better himself and not to trust anyone and for being an intelligent woman. The story was very clear and kept me at the edge of my seat wanting to read more. As a former DJ in NY I mostly played hiphop and R&B. Little did my fans know I had another side.....Freestyle. AT FIRST, I THOUGHT THIS WAS A STORY BASED ON YOUR LIFE LATIF! ITS FUNNY HOW, WHILE READING THE BOOK, THE CHARACTER AND I HAS SO MUCH IN COMMON. THE DESCRIPTION OF THE "BING" IS AS I REMEMBERED IT, BROUGHT BACK SOME BAD MEMORIES THAT I CHOOSE NOT TO REMEMBER. I PUT THE BOOK DOWN FOR A MINUTE, BUT I FOUND MYSELF INTRIGUED AND COULD NOT STOP READING. ESPECIALLY THE CHARACTERS LIKE BLAK AND FLACO, "FUNNY HOW MY SONS NAME IS FLACO". GREAT NOVEL

This novel was great it had me going from the first page to the last page, I was able to see a lot of myself in this story. There were many times through out the book that i just knew what was going to happen and to my surprise i found out that am no mind reader and the story goes in the other direction.

There was a happy ending, but not the one i was looking for and that was what i did'nt expect. All and all i cant remember the last time i read a whole book and this one was worth me reading.

I enjoyed this novel and look forward to reading his next book, and that is coming from a man that don't read novels at all. By the way there can be a part 2 to this book and it can end the way i want it too lol.

This book is AMAZING!!! Totally NOT what you would expect. The twists and turns in this book, will get you hooked from the very first page. Just when you think you know what's going to happen next, BAM! something that knocks you for a loop happens. As I finished this book this morning, I realized that I never contemplated much about the gambit of entertainment outside of Hip-Hop. Growing up in Brooklyn, the divisions within music genres multiplied in the the late eighties. Many of the secular genres dried up and died down, some are all but extinct.

"Freestyle", with it's 16th note hi-hats and 120 Beats Per Minute's begin to fade in face of the rapid evolution of Hip-Hop. Adding to it's demise was the huge success of crossover hits from freestyle artists, which ultimately caused an over-saturation in the genre. To many in the urban communities it became the only alternative to a life of squalor and poverty. Naturally, this explosion in the population of those attempting to become stars led to more unscrupulous business practices and an overall perversion of the artform.

In "Freestyle for Life" we follow a young successful artist named "Solo" who wears his heart on his sleeve and is loyal to the point of naive to his surroundings. He begins the hard grind of climbing his way to the top near the apex of the genre, only to have his career and life derailed by an improbable incarceration. Surviving the barbaric and mundane existence that coincides with prison, he returns home to find things have drastically changed during his prison stint.

Resisting the call for conformity with the newly dominant genres of Hip-Hop, he decides to give it all he has and make one last attempt to revive the all but dead music style he loves with all of his heart and soul. But will the same mysterious circumstances that sent him to prison the first time return to haunt him? "Freestyle for Life" is an ode to the love, hate, and envy that success breeds, and divides the lives of men families and friends.

It felt like really being there. There was so much that I related to. From the not knowing what would happen next to folks making you second guess things and so much more! I have to tell you, I seriously could not put this book down. I would have to peel myself away so I could get on with my day or even sleep. It just had me wanting to know what would happen next! This story had me sad, upset, almost in tears and of course excited and very happy too! I loved the way the author took me for a spin on the emotional roller coaster. It was kick ass great! I loved the feel of "REAL" the author brought to the characters in this great story. You just felt like it was almost you in that story! I highly recommend that you get a copy of this book. FREESTYLE FOR LIFE

Realistic, Gritty, Dramatic Debut

This is a well written first-person account of New York's Freestyle music scene of the 80's. It chronicles the life and times of a latino singer, Solo, at the height of the Freestyle latin music scene---and the start of the crack cocaine epidemic. A fictional but very realistic account from someone who lived through it. Some amazing dialogue and character development, and you really feel like you're there, whether it's at Riker's Island, where Solo, who's been framed for drug possession, is dealing with Cano, the big prison gangleader...or at a music club, or back at the apartment of his dear mother who has been keeping a secret from him. You can feel the tension build as things come to a climax. It's got it all: some touching relationships, a protagonist who goes through a lot and grows as a result,an amazing fight scene...and some comic relief, such as scene in which Solo is trying to produce a witnessed urine sample in front of his big, black, female Parole Officer! I'd love to see more from Latif Mercado!

A MUST READ BOOK FOR THE DANCE MUSIC FANS

Great story telling. The minute I starting reading the book, it was hard to put down. The story bring you back to that era where freestyle music was all over mainstream radio and in the streets. This would make a good movie. I recommend this book to everyone that love music.

This story is a deep and heart breaking story but the central characters and personality traits of Solo and Yolanda provide humor to the relationship and overall readability of the book. Mercado writes in a simple and lucid style that endears the characters to the readers and makes the whole story come alive. Once I started reading this book I found it difficult to put down. Highly readable and a completely addictive account of one man's journey though life and the NY penal system. I am thoroughly looking forward to reading Latif Mercado's next offering.

Knowing the Author, I only hoped that this book was going to be worth reading. I would have to face Latif and I hate lying. However, once I started reading the book I became excited for Latif. I was amazed at the work he had created. Working in the industry I was able to relate to many of the characters, not to mention the promotion 101 chapter. Before computers, promoting an album and an artist was all about the street team. Flyers, posters and record in stores was how it was done. Making or breaking an Artist is all about the team! I gotta had it to you La, you messed with my head when it came to the dream scene. This book is a must read! If you love great characters, a great story and want to reminisce about a time when life was all about the "LOVE" of the music. Then purchase this book! I called my mother after reading this book and told her I loved her and made her promise to cook me a "Spanish" home cook meal. Your book made me hungry! Now get busy and start writing the next one. You got some big shoes to fill. Your like Santos, is there anything you can't do!!!
